Former home to the Potawatomi Indians and farms right up until the middle of the 20th century, Brookfield today is one of the most vibrant and kinetic parts of the Milwaukee metro area. Its 28 square miles is home to over 38,000 people.
For people in the city and in the surrounding towns, Brookfield Square mall and the retail shopping strip on Blue Mound Road is part of the attraction. Nearly every national and international brand can be found in this major retail shopping area.
In December, 1839, one of literature’s and television’s most famous mothers was born in real life in Brookfield: Caroline Quiner “Ma” Ingalls, the mother of Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the Little House on the Prairie books. She was, in fact, the earliest known settler born in the town.
